Best Perth Live Music Memory?
There are too many to narrow it down to one! However one that definitely stands out is seeing Genesis Owusu at Rosemount in 2021. He put on such a creative, theatrical show and his energy was insane. I love an artist who puts a lot of thought into their visuals and the story they’re telling as well as the music. It creates a world that brings you in and it was such an incredible show. Another one would be seeing Julia Jacklin for the first time at Perth Festival in 2018. I hadn’t actually listened to her music before but my sister was a fan so I went along and I was hooked straight away. Her songs made me cry. I also cried when I saw Angel Olsen live at Meredith Music Festival, because I just love her so much and it was just really overwhelming. Love a good cry at a show!
All-Time Favourite Music Video? (the one you’ve watched way too many times!)
Oooof this is SO hard. The 1975 have some absolute bangers - ‘A Change of Heart’ is definitely one of my favourites, it’s so beautiful and unique. What I love about The 1975’s videos is that a lot of them have elements or characters that appear throughout different videos - little easter eggs that connect the stories, super cool. Girl in Red has some really beautiful cinematography in ‘I’ll Call You Mine’. Griff’s ‘Miss Me Too’ video is incredible for empowering, beautiful movement (goosebumps). Honestly I could go on and on, but we’d be here all day.
Your Go-To Tip for Breaking Into Music Management?
I think finding a mentor early on is really important. I was so lucky to have done some consultations with music managers I know when I started out, and it gave me a push in the right direction and saved me a LOT of time trying to figure things out on my own. It’s a pretty lonely world being a manager, and you’re really left to your own devices, so community is really important. It’s why I wanted to offer mentorship services, because I know how helpful it was for me!
Your Best WA Music Deep Cut? Could be a venue, a band, or an unforgettable gig story.
Bring back The Bakery! Such a fun venue and right in the middle of Northbridge. I only went a few times before it closed but I remember seeing King Gizz there before they blew up.
